WNYSLL Rules

Grades K-2

Roster and Field Layout

  • 6v6 Lineup: Each team plays with 5 field players and 1 goalkeeper on the field at all times.

  • No Specialists: There are no specialized positions (like FOGO or LSM); every field player plays both offense and defense.

  • No Long Poles: All field players must use standard short sticks to emphasize stick skills and equal play.

  • Compact Field: The game is played on a smaller field, typically 70–75 meters long by 36–40 meters wide. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

    4' x 4' nets

Timing and Possession

  • Game Length: Matches typically consist of four 8-minute quarters or two 12-minute halves with a running clock.

  • 30-Second Shot Clock: Teams have 30 seconds to take a shot on goal from the moment they gain possession.

  • 10-Second Advancement: Gaining possession in the defensive half requires moving the ball past the midfield line within 10 seconds.

  • Over and Back: Once the ball is carried into the offensive half, it cannot cross back over the midfield line, or a turnover is called. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Starts and Gameplay Restarts

  • Quarter-Start Draws: Face-offs or draws only happen at the very beginning of each quarter and overtime period. [1, 2]

  • Goalie Clears: After a goal is scored, no face-off occurs. The goalie immediately pulls the ball from the net and has 5 seconds to pass it or run it out of the crease to restart play. [1, 2, 3]

  • Missed Shots: Unlike traditional lacrosse, if a shot goes wide or high out of bounds, possession is automatically awarded to the defensive team. [1, 2]

  • Whistle Starts: Every restart after a whistle requires players to stand at least 2 meters away from the ball carrier. [1]

Safety and Contact Rules

  • No Body Checking: Body checking is completely illegal in youth Sixes for both boys and girls to ensure safety. [1]

  • Strict Stick Contact: Slashing, hitting, or displacing an opponent with the stick is heavily penalized. [1, 2]

  • Shooting Lane Penalties: Defensive players cannot purposely stack or stand still inside the crease to block shots ("walling"). Shooters must also shoot with regard for player safety. [1, 2, 3]

  • Penalty Durations: Technical fouls result in a 30-second time-serving penalty (or a change of possession), while personal/major fouls result in a 60-second non-releasable penalty. [1, 2, 3]

Are you setting up rules for a specific age group (like U10 or U14), or are you preparing rules for a boys' or girls' league? I can provide the exact age-based checking and stick modifications if needed.
